The World of Kaytriss

The world of Kaytriss is vast; it is approximately 80% the size of our own Earth, though 85% of it is covered by a vast ocean.

The Planetary System

The planet is orbited by eighteen major satellites; seventeen of them (along with 52 minor satellites) orbit in a cluster called the Moonstones, while the eighteenth, the Wanderer, follows a divergent orbit. These are all fragements of a larger body previously known simply as the Moon. The Moonstones orbit in a lunar cycle of 30 days; they tend to be associated with safe navigation and good luck. The Wanderer goes through a longer 49-day cycle; this moon is associated with trickery, disorder, and bad luck.

If ever the Moonstones and the Wanderer are full on the same night, the subseqent tide is known as a “Wanderer’s Tide,” and it is noticeably stronger and less predictable than usual. “Once on a Wanderer’s Tide” is a common idiom that developed to refer to a rare though not unheard of occurence, usually carrying connotations of bad luck.

Here is an overview of the world’s history and calendar. I’ve also written up a brief note on the languages of Kaytriss.

The Continent

The Continent, a moderately-slight region of a larger landmass, is located between 30 and 40 degrees latitude north of Kaytriss’ equator. It is home to the colonial culture of Amunism. The following are major and minor polities of the Continent.

The Kingdom of Gallica
A monarchical Kingdom ruled by a dynasty of conquering Cimmerians.

The Clans of Lochlann
An insular culture of warring berserker clans “ruled” by the High Crown of Wotan.

The Land of Coppalia
The heart of Amunist worship; a loose collection of city states feigning allegiance to the Patriars.

The Kingdom of Astoria
A Feudal Kingdom ruled by a king regularly elected by clan leaders.

The Crowns of Teutanny
A thousand-island archipelago ruled by nearly as many Kings.

The Free City of La Gardé
A wealthy port city organized as a republic, ruled not by nobility.

The Ancient Kingdom of Old Aptah
The historic birthplace of Amun(ism), and a place of pilgrimage

Elsewhere

The Vast Cimmerian Steppe
A loose semi-nomadic horseborn culture numbering hundreds of individual clans.

The Serpent Isles
A dense tropical mega-archipelago currently being colonised by The Continent.

The Empire of Mandé
An insular empire rules a small continent of the same name.
